Care For Some More Wine?: 700-Year Old Poison RingPosted on
August 29, 2013
This is the 700-year old bronze ring unearthed in Bulgaria (two Bulgaria posts in a row, wild!) that archaeologists suspect was used for covert political murders using some form of liquid poison inside. How James Bond-y.
"It's a unique ring," [archaeologist Bonnie] Petrunova said. "I have no doubts that the hole is there on purpose and the ring was worn on the right hand, because the hole was made in such a way so as to be covered by a finger, thus the poison could be dropped at a moment's notice." "Clearly, it was not worn constantly and would have been put on when necessary," he added. Indeed, it could have been the secret weapon used in several 14th century serial murders. "It would solve many of the unexplained deaths among nobles and aristocrats close to Dobrotitca," Petrunova said.Ah yes, the ol' poisoned wine trick -- that's a classic. If I were an assassin in the 14th century you know how I would kill my marks? With a high-powered sniper rifle from a mile away."They didn't have sniper rifles back then." No kidding, maybe that's why I BROUGHT ONE BACK WITH ME WHEN I TIME TRAVELED. I'm not 800 years old you know. Thanks to Lyle, who took his tip-sending opportunity to tell me about how one time his landlady knocked on his door and when he looked through the peep hole she turned into a demon and started hovering. Jesus, remind me to never live in your building. (Source: Geekologie)
